Sister's Place Project
Background
The Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa celebrated its 10th Anniversary in January of 2022 under the theme SENTHEYEE meaning "The Hand that Gives.” A Decade of Transformative Empowerment and, with its quest and vision to promote girls’ education, purchased 12 acres of land to construct dormitories that will accommodate 40 adolescent girls.
During the celebration, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the building project; our Girls’ Empowerment Center, “The Sisters’ Place,” in memory of five Catholic Nuns killed during the October 1992 Octopus Military invasion in Liberia. This educational center will create a safe, self-sustaining, and empowering space to nurture adolescent girls and help them discover their full potential to become productive citizens. This project will also benefit the community through agriculture as we are negotiating with the owners to purchase an additional 13 acres of farmland. The purchased brick-making machine will also benefit the women of Melekie Town through community projects as they will be trained to make bricks for the construction work.
Activities of the training center will include home economics, catering, arts, and crafts, painting & fashion designing, a computer research lab, and a reading room that will allow our girls to acquire
computer knowledge in short courses such as graphic design, software training, and agriculture.
Getting Ready for Construction
The first, yet critical step before construction work, has been completed. The 12 acres of acquired land have been cleared, ready for construction and agriculture projects. A 125KVA diesel silent generator and an automatic brick-making machine with standard accessories have been purchased and are on-site to start the construction work.
We also put out an advertisement, “Expression of Interest for Construction Services” to hire a
construction company for quality and standardized work.
